I received my first Brazilian wax in the summer of 2017 and I have been going semi consistently ever since. There have been a few times I stopped (during pregnancy & pandemic closures) but for the most part, I have gone every single month for the past 3 years. In that time, I have gone to at least 4 different locations and had 7 different women wax me. If that doesn’t make me an expert, it at least makes me a very experienced and loyal customer. With each experience comes lessons learned so I wanted to share a few with you today. This will help you with your waxing adventures.
What I’ve Learned After 3 Years of Brazilian Waxes
Wear Easy Access Clothing
You would think this is a no brainer but not always. I suggest wearing a dress or skirt with slip-on shoes to your wax appointment. This is so that you can easily get in and out of your clothes without having to take a lot of time dressing and undressing. Your climate and the time of year will affect this obviously. When I was living in Chicago in the winter, wearing a dress most days was out of the question but there are things you can do to make sure you have an easy time changing year-round. 1. Don’t wear a romper or you’ll be laying there in just a bra. 2. Don’t wear boots. I suggest gym shoes or moccasins if the weather permits 3. Don’t wear tight jeans. Your skin might get irritated after your wax if you wear tight, restricting underwear or pants.
It Really Does get easier
After getting my soul snatched off of my vagina the first time, I considered never going back there again. My first waxer, Cassie, told me it would get easier each time. My hair would grow back thinner, easier to pull and these would get less and less painful. For the most part that was true. The second time was a lot less painful. It went from a 7 or 8, down to a 4 on the pain scale. Now, it’s around a 3 but I don’t think it will get lower than that. What really helped me was keeping up with my skincare and using the products they recommend. I mainly exfoliate and use their ingrown hair serum to make sure my skin is in tip-top shape and that I get as little ingrown hairs as possible. Trust me, if you want to avoid them breaking out the tweezers, you’ll make sure to follow your aftercare instructions.
Be prepared to assume positions
During the past 3 years, I have found that sometimes waxers have different positions they prefer to wax you in. For the most part, you’ll be laying on your back with your knees up and out in the butterfly position. If you decide to get a full Brazilian (this means that butt strip), you will either be told to bring your knees to your chest, lay on your stomach and spread your cheeks, or possibly get up on all fours. These are the positions I’ve experienced, there could be more but I just wanted to forewarn you that these are all normal so don’t feel weird!
Talking helps
I know exposing your privates to a random lady and then said lady inflicting pain on you is odd and awkward. Sometimes when I think about what we are actually doing in that room, I feel like I’m living in the twilight zone but talking does help. Think about it, if you lay there quietly the entire time it will be even more awkward and probably painful. Usually, the waxer will engage you in some small talk and I find that they do remember some things about your life from previous visits, so I say get comfortable and let conversation distract you from the pain and awkwardness you feel.
Tell your wax tech how you like it
This tip is something I learned last year. I was with a new wax tech and noticed that she was leaving hair behind on the back strip. I also didn’t like how she pulled the strips. Instead of doing one strong pull she would do two or three small pulls, which is more painful to me. I ended up changing techs because of this. I loved the new tech and we ended up talking about my past experiences. During this conversation she told me that it is totally not rude, and welcomed, to call these things out to your tech. You could say something like “I feel a bit more hair here, could you get this?” to let her know. Don’t feel like you can’t say anything because it’s awkward, this is still a service you are paying for so you should always leave happy.
Always Tip the Wax Tech!
Earlier in my wax journey, I would usually tip but sometimes I would forget or just not do it to save a bit of money. I recently started tipping each time faithfully if I have the money. I learned that the girls who work at the larger chains often don’t make much of anything outside of tips, similar to restaurant servers, so the tips are really important. I also just think it’s nice to show a little gratitude. I mean, she was just face first in your crotch for like 10 minutes. Give her some love!
All of this knowledge has been learned over time but knowing them from day one would’ve been helpful. I did a lot of research when preparing for my first visit so I know these are the things us girls want to know about it. I just hope these tips make someone out there more comfortable, confident, and prepared for their wax trip!
