I recently celebrated my 1 year wedding anniversary by taking my honeymoon in Jamaica! For most black girls, myself included, going on vacation also means going on vacation from unpredictable natural hair. So, I took this as my opportunity to finally try a style I have been eyeing for a few months now, Faux locs!
Faux locs have been around so long that they have evolved into many different variations. Instead of getting the standard locs I decided to get bohemian goddess faux locs. These locs have the curly ends that come with typical goddess locs but with extra pieces of wavy hair added at the root or along the shaft the loc so that they look messy, beachy and earthy.
The complete style required 5 packs of Vanessa Marley Hair and 1 pack of Freetress water wave crochet hair. I also purchased 3 packs of loc/braid jewels and 1 pack of gold thread to adorn my locs. All of these things were purchased at my local beauty supply store. After about 4-5 hours or work I was left with 39, shoulder length locs.
The style took some time to grow on me but I ultimatley got the look I was going for. I wanted to look exotic, natural and earthy. This style is very low maintenance. I loved not having to style my hair at all while on vacation. It was get up and go hair! I had no issues transitioning from a bathing suit to a dress either. On nights where we went out to dinner I would wear a deep side part and pin them off to one side. Had they been a bit longer I would’ve been able to do a low bun or pin-up.
Unfortunately, there were a few cons that came along with this style. The stylist used the ‘wrap method’ to achieve the more messy/boho look but unfortunately, all of the locs did not stay wrapped. Several of them unraveled the next day. This along with some of them being bulky and stiff lead to me not liking the style as much as I thought I would. The unraveled locs were replaced with a few premade locs made by Bobbi Boss. The Bomba locs crochet dreadlocs fit in nicely and solved the issues I had.Ultimately I took them down immediately following my vacation because the Kanekalon hair was driving my scalp crazy! Next time I will try to soak the braiding hair in apple cider vinegar and shampoo it before installation.
