My past experience with permanent hair color
I’ve colored my hair a total of two times in my life and both times it ended in tragedy. The first time was right after high school I believe. I decided to get honey blonde highlights in my permed hair because, why not? What could possibly go wrong? Well, it was cute and the color really complimented my skin tone but after a while I noticed my hair was noticeably thinner and all of the blonde hair had exited my scalp. #tragic
The second time I colored my hair was a few years post graduation. This time I did a chestnut brown color on my ends. I loved the color but eventually that broke off as well. I’m sure it was mostly my doing. I’m a lazy girl with naturally dry hair and that doesn’t bode well for hair dye.
Many of us took to drastic hair trends last year during the lockdown. Everyone on TikTok was either dying their hair wild colors, dying platinum streaks around their face, e-girl style, or going completely bald. I’d be lying if I told you I didn’t get the itch to do this. I have always lusted after purple hair but no amount of pandemic downtime was about to convince me to fry off my hair in the bathroom. Even though my good sense kicked in I still wanted to try something new, which is why I was really excited when I saw that As I Am Naturally had dropped a line of temporary curl color.
I have been using As I Am products for a few years consistently now and I am a fan. I have tried most of their products and I have never been let down. Let’s see how this product measures up
Temporary Curl Color Application Process

Applying the temporary curl color was simple. After washing and conditioning my hair as normal, I detangled and parted my hair into 4 sections. I applied only the As I Am leave-in conditionally and some sweet almond oil to moisturize my hair Typically after this step I would go in with the As I Am double butter cream and curly jelly but this time I skipped those products all together.
I applied a generous amount of the curl color and then two-strand twisted my hair. After I twisted my entire head I used my hand held blow dryer to speed up the drying time. I allowed my hair to dry for an entire day.
The next morning, my hair was completely dry. I took down the twists and styled them as usual.

Pros

- The product is affordable. Each jar is only $7.99 on the As I Am website. After one application (using a generous amount on each twist) I think I will have enough for at least 2 more applications.
- The color selection is great! This product is available in 6 unique colors
- Doesn’t transfer much once dry. With simple touching or resting on a car headrest, I didn’t notice much transfer at all. I do have short hair at the moment so my tresses do not brush against my clothes or shoulders. Because of this, I can’t say if the temporary curl color won’t transfer onto clothing.
- Smells good! I was worried it would have a weird smell but it just smells like any other hair care product.
- Really defines curls! This product feels like a curling cream when applying. Once dry, my hair felt like it was coated in the As I Am Curling Jelly or Eco Styler Gel. My curls really popped using this, I was impressed.
Cons

- Transfers a lot while drying: this might be a no brainer to some, but if you have thick hair that takes at least a day to dry, you’ll want to use a blow dryer to help speed up the process. The first time I used this product, this was my main pain point.
- Flakes of color fell out while untwisting/styling: This could be because I used a lot of the product while styling to ensure that the color was as pigmented as possible. I wore a black shirt and noticed a decent amount of fall out while styling.
- Pigmentation depends on lighting: If you are indoors or in low lighting you won’t be able to see the color as well as you’d like. At times the color can even appear dusty or ashy. In direct sunlight or a well lit room however, the color does show up nicely.
- Skin reaction! So unfortunately after using the purple passion curl color I did have a breakout on my forehead and cheeks. The only difference in my routine was using the curl color so I’m pretty sure that was the cause. After washing out my hair and getting on top of my skincare routine, my skin cleared up in about a week.
All in all, I think this is a great product, despite having a bad skin reaction to it. Because of that I probably won’t be using it anymore but I still recommend it to people who would like to experiment with color without the commitment of using dye. After about 3 days I noticed the color fading significantly. I didn’t attempt to reapply the color and do a new twist out because of skin issues but I am interested in seeing how the reapplication would work.

Great review
Great detals. I dyed my hair blonde once when I was 16 and it fell out and I ended up just cutting it. It was tragic. So this dye would be up my alley, but I have really sensitive skin so I appreciate you being transparent about the entire process.
