Black moms and moms of black children know that hair care and styling are a big deal. Growing up, I vividly remember grabbing the hair bucket and sitting between my mom’s legs to get my hair combed. If you don’t know, the ‘hair bucket’ is a container used to organize hair care products, styling tools, and most importantly, accessories. It’s a generational organization tool so of course, my girls had a hair bucket, actually, they had two. One for our lotions & potions and another just for barrettes and beads. Well, both buckets quickly got out of hand and left me searching for a more organized and efficient way to organize our hair care products. Enter my trusty 3-tier craft cart!
I first purchased this a few years ago and used it as a portable infant care cart. Read my blog post on that if you are in need of a portable changing station, pumping station, and honestly, having anything you need for baby care right at your fingertips. This little hack revolutionized my breastfeeding routine and really helped out during the newborn stage. Since then this cart has been many things, there are so many ways to repurpose one, so much so that buying one is never a bad idea.
Why this Organization Hack Works
For a while, I was using the cart to store the overflow of my beauty products but now it has been repurposed again as a portable hair care organizer. I purchased my cart (click here) from Michael’s for $30. The cart is amazing and very sturdy, but the star of the show is the tabletop (click here) attachment that I purchased separately for $10. This really helps while styling hair. If you prefer using Amazon, (for the shipping, I know) they also have a great selection of these carts. This one for example has a top and extra storage on the side. This would be perfect for a curling iron or keeping combs and brushes at the ready. I’ve never felt so organized and efficient while styling hair as I do now that I have this beauty salon on wheels!
How I use my Hair Care Organization Cart
The beauty of this tool is that you can customize it any way you like, whatever is more functional for you. Here is how I have my cart organized:
Top: All of my creams, oils, gels, and leave-in conditioners are at the top of my cart. I keep curious hands out of this by using the lid when I am not styling my hair. The lid also fits on the lower levels so you can change this up to your liking. Having all of my products on the top layer helps when I am standing at the bathroom sink styling my own hair. I can grab everything I need without having to bend over or fumble through things.
Middle: This is where accessories are stored. In small plastic containers from Dollar Tree, I organized hair beads, barrettes, and bubble ponytail holders aka ball balls (if you know, you know). This is probably my favorite feature. Prior to this, I had everything thrown into one bin, which made it difficult to use. Ponytail holders would become tangled and knotted, it was hard to find the right color beads with everything settling on the bottom and being mixed up. This method of organization works for me. I also have a small plastic bag filled with styling clips and goodie hair ties that I used while styling and detangling.
Bottom: On this row, I keep all of my combs and brushes, as well as a few overflow items. I have a larger clear, plastic bucket on this layer that houses our scarves, bonnets, soft headband, and wire headbands. A place for everything and everything in its place!
Haircare organization was a big pain point for me prior to this. It took way longer than it should have to realize I could use my craft cart in this way. Keeping everything in one heaping bucket, although nostalgic, is just inefficient. Being able to push this cart from room to room and have everything I need (vs running back and forth to grab a stray comb) is so helpful. This greatly cuts down the stress and style time for me and my girls.
