If you’re anything like me, cleaning your makeup brushes is your least favorite part of being a makeup lover. If I’m just being honest here, I have some really trifling brushes that haven’t been cleaned in an embarrassingly long time. I’m not going to throw myself under the bus and tell you exactly how long, just trust me okay.
But in 2018 I’m going to treat my brushes and my skin better!
I recently switched over to using a beauty blender makeup sponge to apply my complexion products. I love how my makeup looks a lot better when I use it and I also keep that bad boy clean and ready to go. Even though the beauty blender has pretty much removed my need for a foundation brush I still use brushes to apply my blush and eyeshadow. At the beginning of the month, I threw out most of my old ratty brushes and got a new set from BH cosmetics. In an effort to keep them nice I have dedicated myself to keeping up with regular cleaning. But let’s face it, I’m lazy. Enter the electronic makeup brush cleaner!
I accidentally discovered electronic brush cleaners while searching for new brushes on Groupon. The invention instantly spoke to the lazy girl in me. Instead of ordering on Groupon and waiting to get my cleaner I went over to Amazon (Prime has me beyond spoiled). To my surprise, they have a wide selection of these, made by different companies and in different colors. I ultimately chose the Selene Pro cleaner based on price and Amazon reviews.
What you get
My brother actually ordered it for me as a Christmas gift so I didn’t buy it myself but it is available for under $30. See the link below for purchase. In the box, you’ll get a bowl, the makeup brush cleaner, batteries and collars to fit your brushes onto the cleaner. There are also instructions included in the box but the gadget is mostly self-explanatory.
How does it work
Basically, this device cleans your makeup brushes by spinning them at a high speed in a soap and water solution. After using this a few times I’ve found that the end result depends on the brush and the cleaning agent you use. I have been using my BH Cosmetic Brush set, which consists of mainly circular, fluffy brushes. For the most part, I have been able to use the cleaner to clean all of my brushes but it does have a harder time cleaning the angled brushes. This probably has to do with their shape.
I don’t think this gadget would work at all on paddle brushes or brushes with large, oddly shaped handles because their shape would throw off the spinning motion. I find that it works best with the bigger face brushes, but my smaller blending brushes are able to get clean as well.
My thoughts
Overall I think the product does what it claims, but it’s not magical. I use a small amount of Johnson’s baby shampoo to clean my brushes and this works fine with the machine. If I get too much suds I’ll dump the bowl and fill with clean water to rinse and dry my brush. The cleaning process does remove dirt and holding the brush above water while still spinning does get the brushes mostly dry. This cleaning process won’t overcome extensively stained brush hairs but I think it cleans them just as well as by hand.
I think the best aspect of this machine is that it significantly cuts down drying time. After cleaning by hand my brushes are pretty wet and take hours to dry. After using this you should be able to use your brushes as early as 1 hour later.
In conclusion, I love this thing. I think it makes a great gift and if nothing else it motivates my lazy butt to clean my brushes by making it fun to do. I’ve used it about 3 times since I’ve had it and I’m not bored with it yet!
