Last year Rihanna launched her makeup line, Fenty Beauty, and it had us all SHOOK. Her line of 40 foundation shades, contour & highlight products and brushes snatched everybody bald, then she returned a month later for your wigs with galaxy holiday collection. You didn’t even have time to recover before she came for your follicles when the Stunna Lip paint dropped after that and what else did you have to offer besides your cuticles when the mattemoiselle lip line came out? NOTHING, Girl. Okay, stan moment over.
Anyway, Rihanna is a beast and when these products came out they all got rave reviews from everyone who loved them, including myself (obvi). But now that I have been using them for some time, I wanted to give you my well rounded, unbiased (lol) opinion.
Unfortunately, I don’t have every single thing she has ever sold so I won’t speak on anything I don’t have. Here is my review of everything I have purchased and used extensively.
Fenty Beauty 5 Months later…
Fenty Pro Filt’r Foundation, color #380
This is the foundation that got everybody with less than 40 shades in trouble (we’re looking at you Tarte Cosmetics). I was easily able to find my shade and I truly do love the color match. This is the only foundation I wear, and I wear it 3-4 times a week so I can give a knowledgeable opinion on the claims from the Fentybeauty website. It does instantly smooth and covers my skin pretty well, it’s easily buildable and I haven’t had any instances of clogged pores after using it. It is long lasting, I wear this to work and I have no issues with it rubbing off or moving during the d
ay. I do get a bit of creasing (we’ll get back to that) and if I don’t set with powder I get pretty oily after a
couple hours.
Although this is not my first foundation, it is my first high-end brand foundation and so far I love it. The 300 Tan matchstick trio is what I would use if I wanted to go Fenty with my contour products but I actually opted to get the NARS creamy radiant concealer instead. I used this in the shade Sucre D’orge for my highlighting concealer and a black opal foundation stick in the shade beautifully bronze for my darker contour color.
Fenty Pro Filt’r instant retouch Primer
Based on the advice of Jackie Aina, I decided to go ahead and purchase the primer to go along with the foundation. According to auntie Jackie, usually, it’s best to try to use the same brand’s primer when using their foundation for better results. It’s good advice but in this case, it didn’t work for me and here’s why. This primer is incredibly lightweight and very moisturizing. It has a pink tint but it goes on translucent, which is great but I honestly feel like it’s glorified lotion. The website claims that it is shine stopping and it definitely isn’t. I’ve worn this primer and foundation several times without using a setting powder and the oil was crazy. If you are oily, please don’t think this primer will be all you need to stay matte all day. And it does nothing to diminish the appearance of fine lines.
I think it works well under the foundation because with any matte formula your skin needs to be super moisturized, but that’s about all you get for $32.
I use the Sacha buttercup setting powder on top and it controls the shine really well
Matchstick Highlight, color Rum
The highlight sticks were what I was most excited about when this line launched. I think everyone in Sephora was covered in glitter that day. But now that I have had this for a while, it’s probably my least favorite product. I only have one, in the color Rum. It’s very pigmented and versatile. You can use all of the matchsticks as eyeshadow, highlight, and lip color. I have even used it as a body shimmer. The only thing I ally hate is the application. I hate rubbing the stick on top of my face. I feel like it rubs my foundation and it takes a lot of effort to blend out the line of product. This is why I decided against the contour kit.
Stunna lip paint
I hadn’t had a really good red since Mac’s Ruby Woo but this takes the cake. This lip paint is super pigmented. You really only need 1 good coat to get coverage. The applicator is excellent. It’s really easy to get a smooth, crisp line when using it, which is good because this color isn’t so forgiving.
It has a decent wear time but it does move around. I can’t help but compare it to the Coloured Raine liquid lipstick and although I do like the Stunna Lip paint, it’s not as good as Coloured Raine. The Stunna paint moves around quite a bit, and you will need to reapply it to keep that opaque red look.
The shade of red and applicator set this apart but I’ve had better matte liquid lipsticks.
Gloss Bomb
This stuff smells so, so good! Yet another universal lip color from Rih, the gloss bomb looks great on top of other lipsticks and alone. I like to wear this with a brown lip liner and bare face days. The mixing of colors looks really good! This is a really good gloss to have on you at all times. I never leave the house without it.
Mattemoiselle, color Griselda
I don’t have the full size of any of the 14 Mattemoiselle lipsticks but I do have a sample of one. I like pretty much all of the shades and the one I have, Griselda, is a total knock out. What I like about this lip products is that you get a great matte but it actually isn’t drying at all. It glides on like butter. The shape of this lipstick makes it really easy to apply without using a lip liner but of course, a lip liner can add great dimension depending on the color combo. I actually don’t have anything bad to say about this product. I will be buying more in the future for sure!
Highlight brush
Right now Fenty Beauty has 5 brushes and a makeup sponge. I’ve seen the sponge and it’s really soft but after reading reviews about it soaking up too much product I decided to stick with my beauty blender. The only brush I do have is the highlight brush, which I bought because of the odd shape. I think it works and she shape does contour the cheek really well. It didn’t knock my socks off but it is a serviceable makeup too. No love lost.
