After a few mishaps with internet companies, I generally have a rule that I don’t order things I see advertised by small companies on social media. I don’t really like give all of my business to big companies like Amazon & Target 100% of the time but seriously, some of the smaller companies can be unreliable and have bad customer service. When I scrolled past a Milky Mama ad on Facebook for lactation supplements I was curious but wary. After browsing their facebook comments, website and reviews I decided to give it a whirl.
I’m really glad I did.
I found all of the pricing to be reasonable and even though I HATE paying for shipping, it wasn’t too expensive. I ordered the sample pack on a Friday and received my items on a Monday. The quick and easy processing, plus fast shipping already left them in my good graces. In that sample pack, I received oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, one bottle of lemonade and chocolate brownies. I was really impressed with the packaging, which was not only cute but informative as it gave instructions on how to eat and store the goodies. Nothing says professionalism like quality packaging. To me anyway.
Now to the really important stuff, the taste and results. Prior to eating any of the cookies or brownies my milk supply was rapidly declining. I would mainly attribute this to an inadequate water intake, a lazy nursling and a lazy pumping schedule. During a 20 minutes pumping session, I was barely getting a few drops from my left breast and only about 3-4 oz from my right. At this point, my daughter was only 3 months and I went into freakout mode. I nursed my first to 14 months and quitting isn’t an option for me.
After about 2 days of eating two cookies a day and downing the lemonade (which was about enough for 1 tall glass) I saw a slight increase in my supply. I started getting 2 oz from my left and 4-5 oz from my right after 20 minutes of pumping. My breasts started leaking in between sessions again, which is something they had stopped doing and my letdown happened faster once she was latched on. It was the most milk I had gotten in at least a month. Not enough to store but enough to keep my baby full.
A lot of the reviews on their Facebook page shows mom’s getting double or triple their supply after taking the supplements. I didn’t get this result but I attribute that to a few things. 1. Even though I was getting more milk I was still not consistent with pumping. Had I added in another pumping session or made sure I pumped the same amount of times a day I probably would’ve seen even more results. 2. I didn’t finish my sample pack. I didn’t like the taste of the brownies so after the cookies were gone I stopped. 3. I don’t know how long the moms online were using the supplements or how often they pump to achieve those results. Basically, user error was my only downfall.
But since taking them my supply has not dipped as low as it was before. I did re-order the oatmeal chocolate chip lactation cookies. I never liked oatmeal cookies but these actually taste pretty good. There is a large variety of snacks and supplements on their site, which I may try but honestly, the cookies work fine.
Some of the days while eating the cookies I did also take Fenugreek and drink a blessed thistle + fenugreek lactation smoothie. On these days my supply was excellent. You don’t have to do this but like I said, my supply was dangerously low and I was trying everything!
Milky Mama receives and A+ in my book. Great prices, professional business, smooth transaction, fast shipping, great taste and good results (with proper use).
