Protective styling and maintaining healthy ends is my number 1 goal since I don’t have access to my usual stylist. I don’t get my hair styled professionally on a regular basis in normal circumstances but due to COVID, I for sure am missing some salon time. Since I’m not going out too often (or at all most days) I’m trying not to stress out about my hair or manipulate it unnecessarily.

During the pandemic, I’ve been washing my hair every 2-3 weeks with CO-washes in between. My toddler is also on this schedule. Instead of allowing her to wear her hair down and curly, I’ve been doing individual braids with beads. This has been keeping her hair neat and protected so I don’t have to worry about retwisting and styling every other day. As for me, I’ve been keeping my flat twists in for 5-7 days and only wearing my hair out when I need to take pictures or if I’ll actually have visitors. So, yeah I’m in a bonnet or satin scarf 95% of the time and I’m fine with that.
When I do need to venture into public I wear a headwrap or hat over my satin bonnet. Headwraps have always been near and dear to my heart but they are the MVP of my hair life right now. We moisturize daily with sweet almond oil and spray leave-in conditioners. This is necessary for our thick hair and this dry Arizona air. Ever since moving here, I feel that my hair and scalp have suffered from Arizona’s low humidity and high heat. I’m still mixing and matching products to combat this. I’ll update you when I find a solution!
I’m hoping that because I’ve been keeping my hair protected and moisturized that when I finally do return to the salon I will be able to retain most of the length and my hair will be even longer than it is now. As with everything, my main goal right now is to keep life simple and not be too hard on myself about the state of my hair in a pandemic. Just doing the best I can!
