Leather statement pieces should be in your wardrobe. Be it a skirt, joggers, leggings, or a jacket, you need to have at least 1 great leather/faux leather item. Classic black leather is easy to style and typically looks great even if it isn’t genuine leather. I also enjoy a nice cognac brown faux leather piece and on occasion a deep oxblood red.
For some, styling these pieces can be intimidating. You have to find a good balance when choosing accessories and other clothing to compliment your leather statement piece. You don’t want to end up looking like Eddie Murphy circa 1987 or a comic book villain.
In this blog I want to show you how I style my faux leather skirt. I break down how I choose the pieces and how they create cute, non cliche looks. The skirt I’m wearing came from Forever 21. I purchased it at least 5 years ago and they no longer sell it but this skirt and this one are close duplicates.
3 Ways to Style a Leather Skirt this Fall
Look 1: T-shirt & Leather skirt outfit
Wearing a simple graphic Tee with a leather skirt or even pants is an easy way to make the look edgy yet casual. This will work with almost any graphic Tee. I decided to wear this Game of Thrones shirt from Target and clear heels. I would wear this drink out to a bar for dinner and drinks on a date with Hubs or girls night. It has a subtle sex appeal but you can still be comfortable and covered up if that’s your thing! I tied the Tee at my waist to emphasize my hips and show a little midriff. If you don’t want to do this, you can tuck the shirt on one side of all around. This will still draw attention to your waist and prevent the T-shirt from looking frumpy.
Look 2: Knit Sweater & Leather skirt outfit
This is great for those of us living in colder climates. I wore strappy sandals but you could easily wear black tights and add calf boots or booties for more warmth if you need it. I really enjoy contrasting fabrics in my wardrobe and home decor. The soft, fluffy knit on top of the sleek leather just makes this outfit interesting. The leather brings out the daring side and the knit makes the leather less intense. It’s a great balance. As you can see, this sweater is cropped. I chose a cropped sweater to again, draw attention to the waist, and create an interesting shape with the long length of the skirt and the short length of the top. If you don’t feel comfortable wearing a cropped sweater, you can wear a normal sweater as well. I would opt for one that isn’t super long. Maybe something that stops and cinches in at the waist. Here is a similar sweater to the one I’m wearing, which is also from H&M.
Look 3: Lace Top & Leather Skirt outfit
This look will be a bit daring for some and I totally understand. Just hear me out! Going back to the point about creating contrast with these fabrics, nothing creates a better contrast than lace and leather. There is a reason these two are always put together. It’s hot! I wore something very similar to this for Valentines Day this year, instead of the skirt I wore these black high waisted jeans. This teddy is from amazon, click here to purchase. It’s actually really amazing quality and it looks great worn as a shirt or as lingerie. People are wearing underwear as outerwear, so don’t be alarmed. This is the same lane as wearing a bralette as a crop top in the summer, a slip dress as a summer dress, and wearing a teddy as a top. Because it is actual lingerie it is completely see-through. I wore these skin-toned nipple pasties underneath to cover up those important parts. I also put a denim shirt jacket on top to add warmth, cover-up, and add even more edge by throwing some denim in there. If the thought of wearing this freaks you out, I got you covered. You can wear the denim with a lace lined cami, like this one, and still get the look and feel of lace & leather but without showing as much skin.
I hope this was helpful! I really enjoy styling pieces in multiple ways. It helps my pockets and allows me to show my personality, no matter how I’m feeling that day. Let me know in the comment section which look is your favorite. Are you going to pick up a leather skirt now?
