Pulling off a great Halloween costume can be a challenge but I promise this one is inexpensive, practical, and a guaranteed hit! But most importantly, this costume does not take a lot of time to perfect the look. This is perfect for the moms who don’t have time to hand sew and dye fabrics to perfection. This is not a project that will stress you out, trust me. You only need a few key items to pull off the Chucky look and the great thing about this costume is that you don’t need the exact costume the murderous doll wore in order to nail the look. Ever since the 90’s a set of overalls, a striped shirt, crazy orange hair, and scars equal a killer Chucky costume. I searched the web (mostly Pinterest), to get ideas on how to pull off the look. Here is what I came up with. DIY toddler Chucky Costume
DIY Chucky Toddler Costume
Overalls:
We used boys overalls from the Gap for our look. The boy’s overalls were, in my opinion, gender-neutral and a lot more similar to Chucky’s so I got these instead of the girl ones. I got them in a size smaller since the boy’s clothes run bigger in this store. I did not customize them more than what you see here. In many pictures, I see that people have used 3D fabric paint to draw shapes on the overalls and the ‘Good Guy’ logo to complete the look. I would have done this but I decided that it would be best to keep them in as best shape as possible since she will continue to wear these past Halloween or gift them to a boy cousin. This is a nice set of overalls! (after sales & cardholder discount these were $23). If you want to customize your child’s overalls, I would suggest buying them from a cheaper store or even from the salvation army.
Tshirt:
I could not find a shirt exactly like Chucky’s in her size so I had to improvise. I settled on a navy blue and white striped shirt from Old Navy‘s toddler boy section. Pro Tip I’ve learned along the way: always check the boy’s section! To get a look more similar to the doll’s I colored in the white stripes with fabric pens. Not perfect but good enough for one night. (The shirt was on sale for $9. Pens from Jo-ann fabrics.) To be completely honest with you, I stopped filling in the stripes about halfway down. Sorry, I was doing a million things at once but the overalls cover the bottom of the shirt so no one knows except for me and you 🙂 Remember what I said about things not being perfect!
Shoes:
We used Baby P’s old, white converse and painted
them red instead of buying new ones just for her costume. These were on the verge of being too small anyway and they were quite dirty so there was no question of whether I should paint them or not. You can opt to buy a cheap pair of red shoes, repurpose an old white pair like I did or if you just like red shoes feel free to buy your little one a pair that they can wear well after the Halloween. I was able to use the same fabric pen on the shoes that I used for the t-shirt.
Orange hair:
The orange hair was a hit at the party. My child’s hair is dark and curly but I was pleased with how much color pay off we got. My expectations were low. We picked up a can of orange hairspray from the Halloween section in target but these are everywhere during Halloween. I don’t think any one brand is better than the other so just pick one. You can also purchase a can at Walgreens year round but they are more expensive (and probably better quality). The can I got from Target was $2. Be sure the read the label carefully. The application can get a little messy if those little fingers get curious but we managed to avoid any major disasters. The spray made her hair hard and dry so you’ll want to shampoo it out before bed. It took about three later, rinse, repeat cycles to get all of the dye out. A little coconut oil and moisturized restored her fro back to its glory.
Scar Tattoos –
These are really important to the look. Most people use face paint to do the scars, which is perfectly fine. I just know my toddler and if she knows it’s there she will rub it off. The tattoos were sturdier than cheap paint and a lot more realistic. I purchased
these from Amazon for $7 and I received plenty of tattoos. They do not come with instruction but if you’ve ever put on a temporary tattoo as a child you’ll find that it’s like riding a bike. She was a little confused when she saw her reflection but she never tried to pick them off. To remove we used warm water and rubbing alcohol.
The bloody knife that Chucky sports is optional. We didn’t get one because I was paranoid about her poking her eyes out or breaking it before I even got the chance to take the pictures. If you are looking for one try Amazon. They had a great selection and of course, Prime members get fast and free shipping. But as you can see the look can be complete without the knife.
