Let’s talk about skincare as self-care. Obviously taking care of your skin is self-care because you are literally caring for your body, but it can also help you mentally. My nighttime skincare routine is one of my favorite parts of the day. Being a SAHM is an exhausting and demanding job. I am typically running around from 6 am to 10 pm doing various tasks. Most of my day is dedicated to caring for my kids, household upkeep, content creation, and work so nighttime is my time.

Each night, after the kids have gone to bed, I shower, and then I spend 10-15 minutes doing my simple skincare routine while watching youtube videos. All parents should have some time to themselves and I spend part of mine caring for my skin. Honestly, it’s super relaxing and just so happens to benefit my health and appearance!
We are all aging and to make sure we age gracefully we need to hydrate, moisturize and love our bodies! I’m no esthetician or dermatologist, but I have spent a lot of time researching and trying out products, so I’d like to share my nighttime skincare routine with you.
Before we get started, remember a few quick tips:
-Apply skin care products from thinnest, to thickest end with oil based products.
-Apply products to your neck, chest, and hands! These spots tend to be neglected and are a quick indicator of your age!
– Read and follow the directions on the package of each product before use!
– Research the best products for your skin type and personal skin goals
-I have normal to oily skin with very little breakouts and some slight discoloration.
Easy Nightly Skincare routine
Step 1: Cleanse the Skin
If you wear makeup during the day, making sure your skin is completely clean before applying other products is very important. Instead of using makeup remover wipes, try a microfiber makeup-removing cloth. I got mine at Dollar Tree and they work really well. You can also try this one from Amazon. These cloths take off almost all of your makeup with just water! You can use micellar water if you like but that isn’t necessary.
After this, use your favorite cleanser to remove any makeup, dirt and oils left behind. I am a big fan of the Aveeno Foam facial cleanser but I also really like CeraVe’s cleansers.
Step 2: Toners, Essences & boosters
Now it’s time for the first round of products. I usually start with toner. This product helps remove additional oil and dirt from your pores after you wash your face. Follow this with rose water, which reduces redness and puffiness while improving your skin’s complexion. Then finally, hyaluronic acid. This product increases moisture and reduces signs of aging like wrinkles and fine lines. Be sure to apply these products while your face is still damp to aid the products in locking in moisture!
Here are a few brands that I highly recommend!

Step 3: Eye Cream
I just recently added this step to my routine after my 30th birthday! I noticed some dark spots and fine wrinkles forming so I pay special attention to this area. Like most skincare products, application is very important. I’ll explain briefly how I apply my eye cream but read this article on Shape.com for an in depth breakdown.
First, apply a few drops of your eye cream to the back of your hand or between your fingers. Your body heat will warm up the product making it easier to apply. Then gently massage into the skin under your eye, the upper orbital bone, and the corner of your eye (where those crow’s feet intend to rest).

Step 4: Treatments and Serums
After the eye cream is absorbed into the skin it’s time to apply your treatments and serums. Here is where I apply my vitamin C serum. This product also reduces signs of aging while also evening and brightening the skin tone. It’s important to note that all products don’t get along well so be sure to do lots of research before forming your skincare routine. On the days that you apply nicotinamide, you will want to skip vitamin c serum altogether. Nicotinamide will make vitamin C less effective, so stagger these products.
Step 5: Moisturizer or Night cream
Almost done! I use a different moisturizer at night than what I use during the day. I’m not sure what the difference is but one has SPF and the other doesn’t! I will say, the Burt’s Bees night cream I use is very rich and my face feels wonderful after I use it. A little goes a long way with this product. I apply a nice amount to my face, neck and chest.

Step 6: Face oil
I sometimes finish off my nighttime skincare routine with a small amount of vitamin E oil, or sweet almond oil. This is helpful with reducing signs of aging, and discoloration. I especially apply this under my eyes because I feel this spot can appear dark. Using the oil last helps trap in moisture and improves absorption of the other products. You can get his product anywhere from Amazon to your local grocery store.

Weekly Skincare routine
There is your basic nighttime skincare routine. If you have a few extra minutes, it’s great to use a facial roller to massage your skin, improve circulation and product absorption, among other benefits. Throughout the week you may want to add an extra step or two to make sure your skin is in tip-top shape. I would suggest exfoliating 2-3 times a week, depending on what your skin can handle. I like the Ma’U Silks facial exfoliator or the Honey Cane natural sugar scrub. Also, consider adding in a facial mask 1-3 times a week. The great thing about masks is the variety. You can easily choose the right mask to help with whatever specific skin issues you may have.
