As my toddler approaches 2 years old I’ve been looking for ways to get her talking and learning more and more each day. We have been working hard to turn those exclamations of gibberish into English words by reading, playing interactive games and explaining our every action to her. In addition to this, we often allow her to play interactive games on our phone or iPad. She loves playing with virtual puzzles, flashcards, and sorting games but somewhat of a screen addiction has begun.
As a millennial momma, I have come into the habit of defending my pocket bff (iPhone) but I must admit that it’s a little unsettling seeing the meltdown that ensues when I take the phone away in the middle of the family finger youtube video. Yikes! In an effort to switch things up and bring my baby back to the physical world, I have begun looking for little games she can play. Inter Pinterest and this amazing sorting game.
With just a few clicks from Amazon you can create this for your kid, it’s super easy. I purchased these counting chips with 5 basic colors (red, yellow, green, blue and orange) and I found matching cups to match for $5. The great thing about the cups is that you can also use them to drink out of when not playing the game but they are so cheap that you can buy another set specifically for drinking! I tried to purchase the small munchkin bowls for this project based on a pin I saw. The mom in my pin-spiration post used buttons instead of counters and cut slots in the bowl lids for the buttons to slide through.
This seemed like a great idea until I realized that usually the bowls and lids don’t match in those packs so I would need to buy a few to get all the colors I needed. After watching her play accidentally mix up the colors I realized that using a lid might make the game more complicated.
My toddler loves this game. I spread out the cups and gave her 3-4 counting chips in each color. depending on her mood she will sort a pile by herself but often I have to give her one chip at a time so she’ll stay focused. I say the name of the color when I hand her the chip and cheer when she sorts it correctly. If she sorts it incorrectly Isay ‘Uh Oh, that doesn’t go there’ and help her put it in the right cup.
This is really fun and it keeps her busy while I wash dishes or get quick tasks done. When we get colors squared away I will try out another sorting game for animals or shapes!
