My little girl loves to sit at my vanity with (and sometimes without) me and watch me do my makeup. This is totally adorable! I really love that at the tender age of 1 years old she is already a girly girl and avid makeup lover. At times we do sit there together and I let her play with the brushes but I wanted to give her her something more. This DIY gave me just what I was looking for!
There are only two things you need to do this. You will need an empty eyeshadow palette and nail polish in at least 3 different colors. This project is great for kids 1-year-old and up.
I purchased two L.A. Colors eyeshadow palettes from Dollar Tree for a dollar each. I got eyeshadow palettes but you can also use pressed powder or blush compacts. Anything will do. I would suggest getting something with an easy to open clear lid. I think being able to see inside while the palette is closed makes it more attractive and my toddler loves opening and closing her pallet.
The process of creating this DIY was really quick and simple. 1. Using a knife or flat edge utensil, scrape out all of the makeup. (this was oddly therapeutic)
2. Wash out the excess and dry the pallet or compact.
3. You can either paint on or pour in the polish to color the wells of the makeup pallet. I tried both methods and the results were pretty much the same. I used nail polish I already had but if you want to use new polish I’m sure you can find good colors for cheap at the dollar store.
4. Set the pallets in a room temperature, out of reach place to dry. I put mine on top of the fridge and let them sit for a day before letting her use them.
5. Time to play!
I sat my daughter at my vanity and presented her with her brand new pallets. In the past, she has played with my real eyeshadow pallets, much to my dismay so I could see in her eyes that she was happy to finally have the approval to play at my vanity. It was amazing to see that she automatically knew what to do with the little applicator brush. She even tried to put make-up on me.
I figured that this, much like everything else, would only keep her attention for a few seconds but she actually played with them for a decent amount of time. In order to keep these new and interesting for as long as possible, I keep them in my vanity and only let her play with them at certain times, mainly when I’m doing my makeup. Usually, when I sit at my vanity she likes to join me, either to watch or play in whatever I allow her to touch. These toy palettes are a great way to let her feel involved while giving me a chance to finish my routine without worrying about where her busy hands are.
