Usually, I’m an action movie girl. In another life, and sometimes in my dreams, I’m a kick ass action star. Saving the world, punching bad guys, jumping from builds…. Yeah that’s my vibe. I love superhero flicks, high octane action and most especially, horror movies. But on occasion, I like to cuddle up with some wine, a blanket and a nice rom-com or rom-dram.
I’m really picky about movies, especially this kind of movie. I’m not the kind of girl who will watch anything sappy and emotional. It has to have the right story, cast and ending in order to really grab me and keep me coming back for more. To be honest, this is why I usually stick to the same few movies, only adding a new one every few years. Yes, years! I wasn’t joking when I said this isn’t my home movie genre, I’m just a visitor.
But even though I don’t frequent the genre, I think I have pretty good taste. Here are my favorite romantic comedies and dramas, ranked!
10. Practical Magic – Coming in at #10, this supernatural movie about sisters is for sure one that I watch whenever I see it on TV. I even own the DVD! I really like the magic aspect but really this is a movie about sisterhood and moving on from bad relationships and into good ones.
9. The Notebook – I’m not even sure that this would be a romantic drama list if this movie wasn’t on here. The Notebook will forever be in my top ten because of its themes of classism, and how love and marriage looks over the course of a lifetime. Love at 18 looks very different at 78!
8. Moonlight – This movie is so beautifully shot, and the story is so beautifully told that I couldn’t leave it off of my list. I love everything about this story. I feel like many haven’t watched it because of their homophobic tendencies but this movie is powerful. More stories like this need to be told.
7. 500 Days of Summer – This movie got me through a lot of breakups. The line “When you look back, I think you should really look again” taught me so much. After a breakup it’s easy to romanticize everything and amplify your hurt feelings, but sometimes things look a lot different when you look back with new, non-rose -colored eyes.
6. For a Good Time Call – #6 is a hidden gem. Most people I know have never seen or heard of this movie. Neither had I until a good friend forced me to watch it in college. Thanks Ashley! This movie is really close to my heart. Multiple relationships are shown but the most important is between two best friends… who happen to run a phone sex line. Yeah… it gets interesting!
5. The Photograph – This is the most recent release on my list but it is so good that it ranks at #5 amongst these oldies. I;m not sure if it was the cast, the story or the fact that I hadn’t seen a romantic drama with an all black cast in YEARS but I was completely enchanted with this movie. This is a strong recommendation for me.
4. Poetic Justice – Even now in 2020, watching this movie gives me so many feelings. John Singleton, god rest his soul, was able to portray characters with so much nuance and heart. I really appreciate the stories told with these characters and the fully fleshed out world.
3. Boomerang – This movie is the spirit of the 90’s. Everybody is funny, everybody is FINE and the history of this film is just… exquisite. The sound track with then newbie Toni Braxton is one of my favorites. This movie is a classic. Period.
2. When Harry Met Sally – It’s just something about this one that I really love. It might be Billy Crystal’s dry humor or Meg Ryan’s hair. Either way I love a good best friend turned soul mate’s story. I especially love the twists and turns their relationship takes.
1 Moonstruck – I adore this movie and I don’t even know why. It might have to do with the queen Cher, or a quirky, yet hunky, young Nicholas cage. Honestly, it might just be the charm of the Italian, New York scene. Either way I love this movie. I sing the songs and say the words every time I watch it!
I hope you enjoyed this list. Have you seen any of these? Let me know what’s on your top 5.

When Harry Met Sally is so classic and so good!
My best friends wedding would probably be one of my favorite romantic comedies. Spanglish is another one. Return to me is another goodie. Im big on indie movies so I have a lot of less known favorites I could share with you because I’m a movie nut! All these movies being me nostalgia and I think play a big part in why they are some of my favorites. I’ll always choose classic over new age too.
